You open the email from your client and staring back at you is a dreaded .pub file — a Microsoft Publisher file. This is a problem because QuarkXPress and InDesign just laugh at you when you try to open it to output or touch it up. Even worse if you’re on a Mac because Publisher is Windows only.
How do you get this file to a usable state or at least get a PDF to look at so you can recreate it? Go to www.zamzar.com.
Zamzar is free file online conversion. While it doesn’t convert QuarkXPress documents to InDesign, it’s still incredibly useful in that you can convert a multitude of other document formats, including Publisher .pub files and WordPerfect .wpd files — files you’re almost certain to run into from your clients — into PDF files, Microsoft Word docs, html, rtf and other formats so you can edit and extract text or just view the document. Although the site says the free service can take 24 hours to convert a file and send you the link to download the conversion, I’ve rarely had to wait more than an hour to receive the notice that my files were done.
Zamzar.com converts a variety of files and there are target formats that nearly everyone can use. Zamzar is one of the biggest go-to sites in my toolbox and lets me take unusable files from my clients and convert them into files I can then work with. Zamzar is an essential site for anyone who works with client-supplied files.
